Margaret Thompson, The Inland Sea, 2026
Oil, wax, raw pigment, collected earth and sand, temple oil on linen
40 × 48 inches
$7,400
Created in conversation with Frida Kahlo's “The Broken Column,” this painting shifts her original axis as a symbol of pain and rupture to one of an inner primeval world. Aquatic moths gather around the figure while she holds the moon in her hand, acknowledging the pull of the tides. The beam of light running through her body links her interior world with the natural order of things. The painting imagines the soul as an inland sea, contained safely in the body and holding memories of deep time and the origins of things.
