The artist constructs an uncanny atmosphere by juxtaposing seemingly ordinary objects with unsettling elements, as seen in the still-life composition of “Cocktail Party”. A partially eaten pear with glistening droplets, a blood-red cherry crushed beside a knife, and an enigmatic black creature with glowing eyes create a sense of quiet tension. This work embodies the artist’s fascination with imbuing domestic settings with dark humor and surrealism, transforming a refined dining moment into something both playful and ominous.

Minyoung Kim is a Korean artist born in 1989, currently based in UK. She holds an MFA in Painting with Distinction from the Slade School of Fine Art. Her works have earned her several accolades, including the Slade Print Fair Scholarship and the Terence Cuneo Award. Kim’s practice centers on exploring the surreal and uncanny through playful yet enigmatic narratives featuring mischievous feline figures. Blending personal emotion with visual metaphor, her work invites viewers into spaces that straddle whimsy and tension, fantasy and unease.
