EMBAJADA

San Juan

Lulu Varona, “Mapa,” 2020, Collection Yola Colon

Embajada features textile embroideries by emerging Puerto Rican artist, Lulu Varona, included in the recent defining survey of Puerto Rican contemporary art at The Whitney Museum ‘no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria…’ curated by Marcela Guerrero.

The works are made using a cross-stitch technique learned as a child from the artist’s grandmother. Embroidered text based works feature popular Reggaeton lyrics combined with tableaux of self portraiture and Puerto Rican imagery that come together to address matters of the personal, political, and social.
