Stacy Lynn Waddell, Untitled (Young Girl with Bell Bottoms) for M. S., 1972
22-karat gold leaf on linen
48 × 36 inches

Stacy Lynn Waddell’s practice investigates beauty and transformation through experimental and alchemical processes, presenting the view that certain objects, images, and words hold powerful and sacred potential to move and transform us. Using heat and laser technology, accumulation, embossing, interference, and gilding, she creates works that intersect both real and imagined aspects of history and culture.

Here, she recreates the dynamic figures found in the photography of Malick Sidibé which captured the post-independence exuberance of Malian music in the 1960s.
