An interpretation of the Lovers archetype, this work was made in response to “Spring in Central Park” by William Zorach, a painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that touched my heart the last time I visited New York. It draws on early modernist visions of lovers embedded in nature, the world unfurling around them. Here, love is a place, it is spacial, it can be inhabited. I put intimacy at the center, a counter-force to dark times, and selected warm tones to saturate the space with emotional color. Birds, fruiting trees, candle, rose, galloping horses, and distant mountains unfold as emblems of spiritual and earthly abundance, recurring motifs in my visual language.
