The Hole is delighted to present Wild, an immersive hunting cabin installation featuring paintings by Matt Belk. Working in airbrush on canvas Matt Belk’s inventive layering reconsiders mannish scenes of game hunting. Key players in Belk’s scenes are his airbrushed hunting dogs. Like Courbet’s handsome and vicious hounds, Belk’s own dogs chase duck, pheasant and salmon through hazy wetlands and forests. Loyally they present prey to the viewer. The uncanny gaze of Belk’s animals relegates the comfortable, nostalgic memories of an L.L. Bean-type outdoorsmanship to a bygone era.
