PRIMARY presents seven new paintings by the Pictures Generation artist Philip Smith. Through a pictorial language, Smith responds to growing up in a home where speaking to spirits and participating in seances were standard. “As a child, I learned that the unseen is often more important than the seen.”
Informed by the physical and the metaphysical, Smith’s process of mark-making and erasure brings vibration to the visual aesthetics of the artwork, revealing fields of energy in conjunction with Smith’s own identity, living between the miraculous and the mundane.
