NADA New York 2022

Guzmán Paz (b. 1988, Montevideo, Uruguay) builds small scale scenes where complex psychological narratives take place. Desire, jealousy, admiration, betrayal, introspection, private inner worlds colliding with social situations are enacted by characters who gender-bend, in pieces which combine painting and detailed, laboriously handmade sculptural elements. He is interested in a visual language at the crossroads of pop culture and a playfully baroque sensibility. 

In this work a couple sleeps in bed, two pictures hanging above them depict their dreams, phantasies, or perhaps actual moments of their lives. On the left picture, a person is about to cut a flower but asks permission to the surrounding grass to do so, the grass signals “ok”. On the right, a person has moved his main living quarters to the restroom because he is fascinated by the view from its window, the garden next door, where his neighbor is about to cut a flower.
