The Bell, Mannahatta:
Red Bull Arts New York presents “The Bell, Mannahatta”, a solo presentation of artist Eric Wesley. Part-sculpture, part-performance, the project was conceived as a sequel to “The Bell, Cahokia” (2016), a project that transformed a former Taco Bell in Cahokia, Illinois into a venue for art and performance. Here the focus is dessert. “Eat you cake and have it, too” becomes literal—a formalist statement on matter, infinity, and general physics.
For NADA New York, “The Bell, Mannahatta” is installed within the fair as a self-contained structure. Referencing present-day New York, “The Bell, Mannahatta” comprises intersecting facades of a Taco Bell and Pizza Hut that form a cruz, or cross. A KFC bucket-shaped bell completes the trifecta of Yum! Corp. Visitors will also see (and be seen by) two crows, Heseeus and Sheseeu. At times there will be specifically sliced cake. “The Bell, Mannahatta” extends the legend of The Bell.
TRANSFER Download
The TRANSFER Download is a virtual exhibition format that presents a “download” of artists exploring simulation, algorithm, procedural animation and online practice. Each instantiation of the Download is unique – multiple artworks are installed in one hyperspace, creating a layered salon-style exhibition format.
The works selected for the Download at NADA New York showcase a generation of 3D experimentalism, to spark a discussion of power, technology and images in the 21st century. Participating artists include AES+F, Snow Yunxue Fu, Claudia Hart, Alex McLeod, Eva Papamargariti, Pussycrew, Sabrina Ratte, Rick Silva & Nicholas Sassoon, Theo Triantafyllidis, Lu Yang.
The TRANSFER Download’s immersive 3-channel display is controlled by an iPad which allows viewers to switch between pieces, creating a catalog of a diverse range of contemporary artworks.
NADA Acquisition Gift for BxMA:
NADA and the Bronx Museum of the Arts (BxMA) are pleased to announce the NADA Acquisition Gift for BxMA, an acquisition gift for the museum’s permanent collection that will be selected from the 7th edition of NADA New York, which will take place March 8–11th at Skylight Clarkson Sq.
For the acquisition gift, NADA provides a fund for BxMA curators to acquire an artwork for the museum’s permanent collection. They will make their selection from the artwork displayed by the 100 of exhibitors at NADA New York, who are representing work from 33 cities and 18 different countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Bronx Museum. NADA was founded in New York, and we could not be more proud to have artwork from our exhibitors in such a venerable collection,” said Heather Hubbs, NADA Executive Director. “This initiative reflects our continued commitment to providing our exhibitors with unique opportunities to connect directly with influential curators.”
This new initiative is designed to enhance the relationship between the museum and the fair’s international roster of exhibiting galleries and artists — as well as an opportunity for NADA to support and engage with the art institutions of New York.
“This is a particularly meaningful collaboration between two New York institutions, especially as our curatorial department focuses on our permanent collection,” said Sergio Bessa, Bronx Museum Director of Curatorial Programs. “We look forward to selecting a work that speaks to our curators, and to the 100,000 visitors that come to the Bronx Museum each year.”
Proceeds raised from NADA New York ticket sales will fund the NADA Acquisition Gift for BxMA.
NADA International Gallery Prize: Parallel Oaxaca & Stereo:
New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is pleased to announce Parallel Oaxaca, Oaxaca and Stereo, Warsaw as the 2018 recipients of the third annual NADA International Gallery Prize.
The initiative awards galleries based outside the United States a distinctive platform to participate in NADA New York for the first time in a sponsored booth, furthering NADA’s global mission of cultivation, support, and advancement of new and relevant voices in contemporary art.
“The International Gallery Prize was designed as a platform to support NADA’s global community and spotlight international gallery programs for the public during the fairs,” said Heather Hubbs, NADA Executive Director. “We are proud to welcome Parallel Oaxaca and Stereo to participate in NADA New York for the first time, with two unique presentations.”
Parallel Oaxaca will present work from Jennifer Teets and Lorenzo Cirrincione’s research for Elusive Earths, which explores the moral economies of geophagy: the extraction of natural resources from the earth for pharmacological remedies.
Stereo will present multi-layered paintings by Jakub Czyszczon and small three-dimensional sculptural works by Noa Glazer that share a preoccupation with the material world, creating artworks that combine natural and artificial elements picked up from their closest surroundings.
The 2018 International Gallery Prize recipients were selected by the NADA New York 2018 Selection Committee. The prize is supported by visitors of NADA New York through ticket sales.
