Night Gallery

On view in Los Angeles, CA

Installation view of NADA Miami 2020, Night Gallery, Los Angeles. Photography by Marten Elder.

For NADA Miami 2020, Night Gallery is pleased to present new works by Han Bing, Andrea Marie Breiling, Paul Heyer, Khari Johnson Ricks, Tahnee Lonsdale, and Kandis Williams.

Han Bing’s abstract oil paintings create atmospheric composition whose ethereal, overlapping planes of color take their inspiration from the fragmented visual experience of the urban space. The effect is of the cityscape’s psychological essence, at once spacious and abundant with detail.

Andrea Marie Breiling’s paintings create chromatic illusions through gridded, overlapping compositions in vivid spray paints. Delighting and tricking the eye, the works are proclamations of painting’s ability to push perception into the imaginative realm.

Paul Heyer’s series of skeleton paintings revive a time-honored trope in surreal tableaus. Relieved of their age-old symbolic trappings and presented against euphoric backgrounds of vibrant colors, Heyer’s works present enchanting possibilities for the afterlife.

Khari Johnson Ricks’ artworks build dreamlike, action-packed tableaus from hand-cut paper constructions painted in handmade ink and watercolor. Johnson Ricks explains that his works metabolize his own experiences, using a language of metaphor that resituates the intimate within the realm of the fantastical.

Tahnee Lansdale’s paintings create parables of the unconscious. Her otherworldly figures, presented in iconographic, geometric forms against abstract backgrounds, nevertheless suggest deeply human experiences of heartbreak and reconciliation.

Plant sculptures by Kandis Williams feature intricate collages on artificial and re-constructed bouquets. Her imagery includes archival photographs of chain gangs on Mississippi farms; images sourced from vintage pornographic magazines; and dancers performing the Uruguayan tango. The works place the movements and adaptations of plant life in dialogue with legacies of forced migration and diaspora.
