Margaret Thompson, For Ithell, The Cardinal Flame, 2026
Oil, volcanic rock, collected earth, temple oil, natural pigment on linen in white wood frame
38 × 27 inches
$5,000
Created in response to “Sunset Birth” and in homage to Ithell Colquhoun’s visionary mysticism, this painting explores the vertical axis as a force of inner and planetary alignment. Volcano, spiral fossil form, and charged archways of light converge to form prima materia, life at its most primordial. A teardrop of volcanic obsidian rock grounds the bottom center. As it evolved, this painting also unintentionally revealed the figure of an angel, wings unfurled over the body of the volcano.
