Sujin Choi, In the Deep Forest, 2025
Oil on canvas
29 × 20 inches

In her 2025 work, “In the Deep Forest,” the artist weaves together familiar motifs from her practice with metaphorical expressions that connect each image to the memories and fleeting moments from which they arise. One recurring element is bread, an everyday ingredient she frequently incorporates into her paintings. Observing the soft interior of bread she ate daily, the artist imagined its exposed structure as a tender, aerated terrain—a kind of living, breathable ground that becomes visually reinterpreted on the canvas. Similarly, the clusters of smoke-like forms and the smudged white passages seen throughout the work reference the artist’s childhood experience with chronic asthma and the lingering complex emotions tied to her breath. By translating the subtle layers of air created during inhaling and exhaling into painterly terms, she embeds traces of breath within the pictorial space, allowing these rhythms to pulse quietly throughout the composition.
