Sujin Choi, Hoopoe on a Pumpkin, 2025
Oil on canvas
29 × 21 inches

To articulate her uniquely constructed notion of layered temporality, Choi Sujin incorporates diverse images alongside abstract cues—such as fields of color and small black dots—discreetly placed across the canvas. These elements serve as symbolic triggers for moments of memory that arise unexpectedly and unintentionally, evoking phenomena akin to the Proustian moment, in which a sensory stimulus summons a past experience, or a form of déjà vu in which overlapping traces of memory surface. Ingredients that appear repeatedly throughout her work also act as immaterial connectors to the artist’s inner recollections. In this painting, for instance, the pumpkin emerges as a dense and weighty form, functioning as a symbolic conduit to the heavy, condensed thoughts residing within the artist’s interior world.
