Sujin Choi, Sunset Splash, 2025
Oil on canvas
82 × 67 inches

Choi Sujin’s practice centers on distilling bodily sensations, temporal residues, and intimate emotions embedded within everyday scenery into a singular, resonant image. Her 2025 work, Sunset Splash, originates from a fleeting moment encountered during a quiet walk. Drawn by the sudden sound of a splash, the artist turned toward a pond and discovered a duck gliding across the water. This simple encounter, intertwined with the layered memories and sensations it elicited, becomes the foundation of the reconstructed scene on canvas. The painting situates the tranquil pond as its focal point while integrating subtle environmental shifts captured in the periphery—such as the ring of a distant phone, music drifting from a passing car, or the lingering trace of a perfume. By placing these sensory fragments within a single pictorial field, the artist creates a landscape where multiple temporalities overlap and coexist. The work ultimately renders a unique “terrain of the moment,” translating the delicate textures of personal experience into a visual rhythm.
