A number of recent works reference Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and the many myths dedicated to the female characters who fled, or morphed, in their paths to escape. The artist looks to the ancient world to channel the intimacy these early artists had with the emotional and physical world of storytelling, and she returns to these myths because they still structure how women are seen. The artist is particularly interested in female figures connected to pursuit, transformation, and conflict, such as Nemesis, Diana, and Helen of Troy. These narratives established enduring ideas about women: chastity, duplicity, endurance, existing as prizes to be won, or being defined through relationships rather than as individuals.
