Jungpyo Hong’s “jusangjeolli(hidden edge #35)” series is inspired by the film Groundhog Day where the protagonist repeats the same day, trying to become a better person with each repetition. Hong has himself supposedly repeating the same day in this series, in hopes that he, as an artist, will be able to create a “perfect work of art.” He does this in the aesthetic form of his other series Hidden Edge, which was influenced by “molding,” a type of finish found in architecture, used to enhance and decorate the aesthetics of a building. The act of stacking and extending the molding on the corners seemed to be the ideal method to hide the mistakes made in the production process, which is reinterpreted by Hong in his work. The changes which occur during the process and the differences between the initial plan and finished piece are reminiscent of the playful aspect behind the conceptual themes, deception, and aesthetic attitude of contemporary art, which Hong regards with a critical gaze.
