In 1991, the Japanese religious group Aum Shinrikyō released a ten-episode anime series titled Chōetsu Sekai (“Supreme or Transcendent World”) to attract new members. Each episode was sold separately on VHS. The full series is now available to watch on YouTube.
Aum Shinrikyō (“Supreme Truth”) was a Japanese doomsday cult founded in 1984 by Shōkō Asahara (born Chizuo Matsumoto). The group recruited followers from all sectors of society, including scientists and engineers, who helped develop chemical weapons such as sarin gas.
On March 20, 1995 (not March 10), members of Aum Shinrikyō carried out a coordinated sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, killing 13 people, severely injuring about 50, and causing temporary or partial injury to more than 1,000 others.
In 2018, Asahara and 12 senior members of the cult were executed by hanging for their roles in the attack and other murders.
