FALSE FLAG

New York

Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola, “CAMOUFLAGE #201,” 2021, durags & nylon, 72 x 72 x 2 inches

Three large all-black durag paintings each hang on three walls of the stand. The fourth wall features a bank of lockers totaling 60 compartments, each containing a totemic object. Visitors are given a single chance to leave with one of the “prizes” placed inside. A taxidermied rooster and lamb anchor the center of the booth. The presentation tackles the fetishization of objects within ritualistic systems: Akinbola’s stated aim is to “liberate these objects from the narratives that oppress them. I see the show as offering deliverance from ideologies: religion, capitalism, even art itself.”
