The Fantastic Voyage of Energy revolves around the multiple meanings, uses, and representations of the notion of energy in our present world.
The series conjures the conceptual displacements and transformations of the notion of energy.The undulating yellow lines of the drawings recall calligraphic exercises, arabesque designs, cross-stich patterns, circuit-boards, en-route charts, and recordings of electrophysiologic activity (electroencephalograms or electrocardiograms), in a referential itinerary that includes design, crafts, engineering, navigation, and medicine.The collages juxtapose representations of energy with images of (female) bodies—sensuous, and at play—drawn from advertisements and found photography, linking physics and biology, industry and sexuality.
If the Law of Conservation states that energy can only be transformed from one type to another, Gabriel Acevedo Velarde stresses that the vitality of the concept is rooted its protean character, shifting from one meaning to another, moving from one field to another. What “The Fantastic Voyage of Energy” reveals a system where science, technology, spirituality, desire, mass media, phantasy and capital exchange continuously like so many images, bodies, and affects.
