In dialogue with his solo presentation by KDR305 at NADA, artist Joel Gaitan joins dancer, musician, and community leader Cecilia Ortega to discuss how their work combines traditions, synchronization, and storytelling and how these practices are interpreted.

With elements of poetry, colors, food, and storytelling, Nicaraguan-American artist Joel Gaitan creates terra-cotta vessels and paintings that interpret symbolism, identity, and language. A love story to his antepasados’ land, Joel’s goal is to represent the unrepresented and to keep traditions alive. Joel Gaitan was born in 1995, he lives and works in Miami, FL.

Cecilia Macuilxochitl Ortega is a free-lance artist, dancer, choreographer, musician, artisan, community leader, mother and doula to her friends. She was born in Martinez De la Torre, Veracruz-Mexico and arrived to the States at the age of 14. She is indigenous (Mexica/Totonaca) and has been living on the east coast since 1996.
