Mishiko Sulakauri, Totem 01, 2024
Steel, acrylic vinyl and spray paint
22.8 × 18.5 inches
Mishiko Sulakauri’s steel object takes the shape of the architectural footprints of a UNESCO-recognised heritage site from his homeland. By placing signs, symbols, gestural lines, and splashes of color that draw their aesthetic form from the streets and popular culture within these historical shapes, the artist questions the direction in which Georgian culture is developing and the fate of ancient monuments as society keeps moving forward.
