Installation view: Liljana Mead Martin, presented by WAAP | Wil Aballe Art Projects, Vancouver

WAAP is pleased to participate in the 2022 iteration of NADA House (Governors Island, NYC) exhibition with new work by Liljana Mead Martin. Encompassing an intimate nook of the House, Mead Martin’s sculptural works explore connections between embodiment, material, and geography, while maintaining an interest in choreographic processes and ecological concerns.

Made from polyurethane resin, Mead Martin’s sculptures cast various human forms, such as fingers and ears, mimicking fungal and floral life through surreal fluorescent petals. Burnt wood bases ground the works ecologically, and their hybrid floral hosts consider how humans may make new understandings of our relationship to the environment. If terraforming is the process of making earth habitable for humans, Mead Martin proposes an opposite action: remaking humanness in order to accommodate the feeling world.

Positioning Mead Martin’s sculptures in the decaying NADA House brings new life and regrowth, a way for human-intervened-nature to reclaim space. Mead Martin conjures ideas of what it might look like should her surreal forms spread over the entirety of Governors Island.
