Alexis Pye, Children's Story, 2022
gouache and graphite on vellum toned paper, acrylic yarn
29 × 29.75 × 2.75 inches

Alexis Pye is a painter who uses the tradition of portraiture to unveil complex truths about the relationship between art history and race. The piece “Children’s Story”, is based off a photo Pye had seen in a Venice Travel book. The picture reminded Pye of the children's books and television show Madeleine. Pye wanted to portray a version of childlike innocence that lived in this language of painting she creates.
