In “Regarding Structures”, Lenard Smith transforms photographic mattes—materials historically tied to protection and display in Black domestic spaces—into speculative architectural forms. Repositioned as primary subjects, the mattes reveal their own spatial logic and cultural weight, exposing how a supporting material can operate as structure, memory, and a site where histories of display accumulate.
