Hyunhee Doh, Scene of Senses 43, 2023
Powdered pigment, graphite, and water-based medium on Hanji-covered wood panel
48 × 48 × 2 inches

Hyunhee Doh visualizes the accumulation and dissolution of sensation and memory over time through the painstaking repetition of layering and washing off pigment mixed with glue on Hanji, traditional Korean mulberry paper. In the Scene of Senses series, the creases and imprints characteristic of Hanji capture shifts in perception as well as deeper transformations in identity, evocative of how the self becomes a record of sensory change. Exploiting the unique way Hanji absorbs water, forms wrinkles on its surface, and preserves even the slightest change in its history, Doh uses the paper’s materiality as a means of revealing gradual, temporal formations, further positioning her practice as an exploration of time and existence.
