Guzmán Paz, Untitled (Buenos Aires Fashion Week), 2021
Oil on canvas, wood, wire, epoxy putty, fabric and acrylic half sphere
23.62 × 21.65 × 7.87 inches

Guzmán Paz (b. 1988, Montevideo, Uruguay) builds small scale scenes where complex psychological narratives take place. Desire, jealousy, admiration, betrayal, introspection, private inner worlds colliding with social situations are enacted by characters who gender-bend, in pieces which combine painting and detailed, laboriously handmade sculptural elements. He is interested in a visual language at the crossroads of pop culture and a playfully baroque sensibility.

This work depicts a runway show during Buenos Aires Fashion week. As a male model walks a yellow dress down the runway, the thoughts of two of the spectators can be seen: the notes of a fashion blogger and those of a make-up artists who imagines how he would have designed the make-up for this occasion. Below the scene, the garments in collection are displayed, each lovingly made by the artist, including the tiny hangers.
As in other of Guzman Paz’ work, the protagonists of the works are the inner worlds of his characters, the actual scene being an excuse to underscore the subjective realm as a parallel reality.
