GeoVanna Gonzalez is a Miami/Berlin-based artist. Her work desires to connect private and public space through interventionist, participatory art with an emphasis on collaboration and collectivity.
“HOW TO: Oh, look at me” is a film that captures the multi-layered, interdisciplinary performance, conceived as an activation of Gonzalez’s sculptural installation of the same name. The performance features an original musical score by Batrypowr, involves two dancers, Cheina Ramos and Alondra Balbuena, and two poets, Zaina Alsous and Arsimmer McCoy, who interact with and exist within the structure.
In the film, two dancers mirror each other, executing controlled, restrained movements in canon. They move in and around the structure independently, separately, as if following their own invisible trajectory. This dialogue of movement, part choreographed, part improvisational, presents a narrative of free exploration amidst the parameters of a structured space.
Gonzalez’s work is interested in investigating how play can function as a tool for self discovery and leisure and how our personal histories help us understand our relationship to each. This is echoed in each poet's intervention. McCoy states “I was only moving according to my ancestry”. A reminder that our movements are, from the beginning, always informed by something. And perhaps also a grace to our older selves.
