TALUS by MICHAEL PORTNOY

TALUS is an abstract gambling event, a NADA Art Fair special project in a tent on the Ice Palace lawn, curated by Liutauras Psibilskis. Michael Portnoy, artist and performer, acts as croupier, leading groups of 4 players through ritualistic, vertiginous gaming sessions around the ultramarine dice table.
His recombinatory sculpture of felt, bone, brass, shell and engraved, burnt and padlocked dice is a little stage where objects and words dance about unpredictably, aligning in temporary compositions, forging experimental intimacies between players who are seeking monetary reward and understanding, but end up falling (chance, from the Latin cadere, to fall) with each other into a rhapsody of deep incoherence.
TALUS is also a preview of ILINX CASINO at Sculpture Center, NY, May 2008.
